The development of gas-fired power plants to replace coal-based capacities is lagging behind schedule, and ceasing to utilize the latter would severely impact the nation’s generating capabilities.

In accordance with current agreements, Romania should cease operation of 2,085 MW lignite-fired power plants by 2026.

The CEO’s investment in new production units, consisting of two natural gas power plants with a combined capacity of 1,325 MW and 8 solar parks totaling 690 MW, plus the refurbishment of a 10 MW hydroelectric power plant, are running behind schedule.

The solar power plants were originally slated to begin operating by June 2024, while the gas-fired groups were supposed to be completed by June 2026. This means that the entire restructuring plan was supposed to be implemented by the end of 2026. According to the CEO’s recent projections, however, the gas-fired power plants will likely start operating in March and July 2028, while the solar parks will be operational by June and November 2026.

As a result, the CEO plans to hire consultants to carry out a project to revise and expand the restructuring plan, a project that will be presented to the Brussels authorities for approval on behalf of the Romanian state.
