Resigned as the Canadian Prime Minister on Monday to bring a sudden end to his time in office, just days before Donald Trump assumes the presidency.

‘A sizeable and deepening divide within the Liberal Party over how to navigate ties with Trump in his second term is now prevalent.’

This led Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau into a flurry of efforts to repair his relationship with the US president-elect before he takes office later this month.

The day following the idea’s unveiling, Trudeau, who was 53 at the time, quickly flew to Mar-a-Lago to undertake damage control efforts.

During that meeting, accounts surfaced showing that Trudeau had urged Trump not to impose the tariffs and warned that they would be detrimental to Canada’s economy.

calling him Governor Trudeau.

The reason Trump aims to impose tariffs on Canada is to nudge the Canadian government to take stronger measures to secure the border and limit the flow of illegal migrants into the U.S.

Will move to validate the 2024 U.S. presidential election results as a victory for Trump and solidify his path toward taking back office.

In the same vein, the Liberal Party of Canada convened an emergency meeting on Wednesday to address the widening split within the party, but Prime Minister Trudeau cancelled out of the meeting prior to its commencement.

On Monday morning at the Rideau Cottage residence in Ottawa, Canada, Prime Minister Trudeau announced that he would be stepping down.

‘I plan to step down as Party Leader and Prime Minister once the Party has chosen its next leader through a thorough, nationwide, competitive election process,’ Trudeau stated in remarks initially given in English and subsequently in French.

Before speaking with reporters, Trudeau described himself as a ‘fighter,’ and expressed the difficulties he faced when deciding to step down.

“I will always be motivated by what is in the best interest of Canadians, and the fact is, due to our inability to make progress, Parliament has come to a standstill for months,” Trudeau said, adding that he wouldn’t be able to effectively campaign for reelection while navigating internal party struggles.

Prime Minister Trudeau will continue to hold office until his party chooses a new leader, a decision they will need to make before the upcoming general election in the fall, which according to polls, the conservative party with Pierre Poilievre at the helm is expected to win.

The head of government since November 2015, a dad of three, has been living at Rideau Cottage with his family. He and his wife, Sophie, announced their separation in August 2023.

He revealed to his kids about his decision at dinner Sunday evening.

Justin Trudeau’s tenure as Prime Minister will now conclude at nearly eight years in office.

While he was preparing to make his historic announcement on Monday, his ex-wife was posting about a skiing trip in Gatineau Park, Canada on her Instagram.

With rumors circulating about Trudeau’s possible resignation, the Canadian Dollar suddenly rallied this week after a drastic and record-setting decline last month.

United States President Trump told conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt in the morning on Monday, before Trudeau’s resignation became official, that it would be ‘very good’ if Poilievre took over as Canadian Prime Minister later this year.

“I completely agree,” he said, but added: ‘We don’t require any assistance from Canada.’

Trudeau’s resignation took place following the decision of Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland to step down in mid-December. Just before departing, Freeland mentioned her disagreements with Trudeau on how to handle Donald Trump’s presidency and his proposed tariffs.

Canada is planning a general election to take place in late October this year.

Once a widely admired political figure, Trudeau’s popularity has waned in recent years – particularly as Trump’s influence has grown. Only one in five Canadians now believe their country is moving in the right direction under Trudeau’s leadership.

Following an announcement in October that Canada would significantly reduce the number of new immigrants allowed into the country.

He admitted that the influx of permanent residents over the last four years – a period where President Joe Biden was also overseeing the U.S. in record-breaking unauthorized immigration – was putting too much strain on the housing market.

This occurs after Trudeau frequently boasts about how Canada outshines other western nations in terms of welcoming immigrants and newcomers.

‘Trudeau Even Wants to Close Canada’s Borders,’ Trump Points Out.

In December, just a month after securing a second term, Trump unveiled his novel idea for tariffs.

He announced his intention to impose a 25 percent tax on goods from Mexico and Canada as retaliation for their reluctance to provide more assistance regarding the fentanyl and migration crisis.

He’s demanding an additional 10% tariff in addition to the already imposed tariffs for China.
